2 September - Tallin, Estonia

When we awoke this morning we had arrived and docked in Tallinn, the capital of Estonia.
Estonia these days is a very technologically advanced country and certainly the skyline of the new part of the city looks modern with skyscrapers and department stores. However we were more interested in the old city, which still shows the legacy of its medieval past. Tallin was once a fortified city surrounded by high walls and substantial city gates, and much of these old structures remains.

The city is located on a hill with grand buildings located at the top of the hill and winding, cobblestoned streets leading to beautiful squares and interesting little streets, which these days feature cosy looking cafes and restaurants and lots of shops selling souvenirs as well as the local crafts. The market stalls are full of beautiful knitwear and fabrics. The overall effect is that you’re in a scene from a Hans Christian Anderssen fairy tale.

We really enjoyed our leisurely walk around the old town and had great coffees and pastries in a beautiful little cafe tucked away in one of the little lanes off the main square.

By 2 pm we were back on the Constellation ready for our 3pm departure. Tomorrow is a seaday so we can sleep in, which is very welcome after a stretch of busy and strenuous days.
