5 May 2010 - San Juan, Puerto Rico

We arrived in Puerto Rico this morning while we were still asleep. Puerto Rico is effectively part of the USA and anyone born here is automatically a US citizen. Went ashore and joined a tour bus for a look around the town. As we only had about five hours here this was the best way to go. Had a very entertaining tour guide and we were very impressed with old San Juan. PR has a rich history and the influence of the Spanish here is immediately obvious in the architecture and the fact that nearly everyone speaks Spanish. We visited the Don Q rum shop and enjoyed free Pina Colada’s made with coconut flavoured rum – delicious. Back on board by lunch time and we sailed at 1:30pm. Later in the evening we received some sad news. After noticing a crew member was missing examination of the CCTV system revealed that he had jumped overboard just after 8pm. The ship was turned around and a search was initiated. The search was finally taken over by the US Coastguard and we were allowed to continue our journey to New York. We will however be arriving about 8 hours late which will throw a lot of people’s travel plans into chaos.

Just returned from a weeks surfing in Byron. Surfing of course plus massages, yoga, beer, restaurants, reading all very restful and relaxing but alas too short to make a lasting impact.

Your trip looks very luxurious so much so I'm glad they have a gym.

See you both when you get back
